I’ve been building worlds in my head since I was a child. Growing up on the island of Kefalonia — quiet in the way only islands can be, especially in winter — I would watch the light shift over the water, the landscape stretch toward something just beyond the horizon. I filled that space with stories. Worlds that didn’t exist yet. Lives I couldn’t live. It was how I survived, and eventually how I learned to create. Photography came later, but the impulse was always the same: to make the things I imagined real enough to step into.

Art direction and directing came after that — when I understood that I didn’t just want to document a world. I wanted to build one from scratch.

I’m Stela Alusi — a photographer, art director and director based in Berlin, working worldwide. Thirteen years across fashion editorial, conceptual portraiture, campaign, and film. Published in PhotoVogue, Faces Magazine, Nasty Magazine, Faze Magazine, Rollup Magazine, Pump Magazine, and others.

I don’t photograph people performing. I photograph the moment after they stop. My images live in the collision — the place where two things that shouldn’t coexist, do. Softness and fury. Glamour and grief. The image that makes you look away, then pulls you back. I’m not interested in beauty that asks nothing of you.

I build the image before I shoot it. The concept, the reference, the casting, the precise emotional temperature of the room. By the time the camera is in my hand, the story already exists. I’m only finding the frame it lives in.
